Hi, you!
I am finally sitting down to write about the recent ‘hard right’ my life has taken.
Hell, I intend to be as super-real as I can humanly be in order to share with you the ins and outs about this unconventional journey in which I am about to embark on as a relatively young solo female living and traveling full-time in a 24′ travel trailer.
This change of lifestyle started with an end. It was the end of an 8-year relationship that sparked the fire that heated up this new idea.
I have done the drastic change thing at the end of every relationship, except for this one. (No, really.) This time is different, but it still seems like a drastic thing to do.
Sure, it’s rather cliché to make a ‘drastic change’ whenever a relationship ends. Maybe a change of hair color is in order, or a change of your lifestyle, a move, getting in shape, whatever begets your internal need to grasp for something new that will help replace the newly missing person.
I have done the drastic change thing at the end of every relationship, except for this one. (No, really.) This time is different, but it may still may seem like a drastic cliché.
So six months ago my 8-year relationship came to a close. This time I wasn’t a kid anymore, and I didn’t need to ‘find’ anything to complete me. I felt complete and in no need to get into another relationship, for sure. However, It took no time at all for me to realize I was free.
I was in a position to do anything I wanted, there was no-one to ‘check’ with, wait for or to make compromises with any longer. I could simply fulfill a crazy idea, such as living out west in a travel trailer, full-time. : D
I am well aware that it might be looked upon as a little off kilter, bizarre, temporary, cliché, whatever. But I am only doing it because I WANT to. And I CAN. I have never had a job that allowed me to work remotely but I do now!
I’m simply free from any responsibilities or commitments that may tie me to a mortgage, job or relationship. What better time to go for it?
Here’s my deal. I looove to travel. I own a modest home that I can rent and that is fairly small, but it’s still too large for me and my two small dogs who, when combined, weigh less than a cat.
I excel at saving money. I dig being frugal. (I still love shopping, if just to find a great deal!) I have a part-time online job that makes a very decent wage, and I can live on the online income and a rental income if I play my cards right.
So In December, after far less research than I usually partake in, I purchased a 2010 24′ Crossroads Slingshot travel trailer and a 2003 Toyota Tundra truck, and my idea was becoming a reality.
I have purged my home of most of my possessions (which I will be writing about how good THAT felt in upcoming posts) and I can barely sit still in anticipation of my new journey…

Fast forward from December to today, after a LOT of work and preparation, I sit here at my kitchen table for one of the last times for a long time, (or maybe the last time ever?) typing this, as this sticks and bricks home will be rented out starting on the 30th of this month. We haven’t signed the lease agreement yet, and boy, THAT is going to be the scary day. It’s the contract that will seal my plans into reality for the next 7 months! Never mind the purchase of the truck and travel trailer and selling all of my possessions! It’s not truly sealed until I have a contract which will kick me out of my house for the next seven months.

I simply believe that it’s the most affordable way for me to travel the continent at my leisure. I’m talking about for the next 40 years, god willing. The plan is to eventually ‘dry camp’ or ‘boondock’ (i.e. stay in places that have no hookups such as water or power/sewer). I will DEFINITELY start the journey in campgrounds, to be safe and learn the ropes, but my longing is to live in and around mostly untouched areas. The wilderness.

For nature.
For quiet.
For solitude.
I might get ‘Into The Wild’, (great movie by the way, but I won’t go that extreme…I need showers and a toilet!) feel all alone and change my mind. I am aware that this might happen and I am open to that potential redirection of plans. (Hence a

So that’s the tip of the iceberg. I (We, if you include Trixie and Gizmo, my animal companions) plan to embark on my/our journey in about 2-3 weeks! I have already learned a ton, and I know I have about 100 tons more to learn. I hope to share it here with you and
I hope to share it here with you and hopefully, I can help you learn from what I have experienced, or, maybe you are a friend of mine and are reading to find out “where’s Kelly?” and see what I am up to! Thank you for reading, in either instance. I promise to do my best to be completely open and honest about my journey and experiences, and to share my adventures, mistakes and experiences with you in a way that makes you feel like you have been there/done it yourself!

I will better introduce myself, my rig and my co-pilots Trixie and Gizmo (preview below), in my next blog.

Thank you for shadowing my journey! I anticipate it to be an exciting adventure!
Update: 12/16/16- Funny looking back at the cover photo- you never take your ‘arms’ of the awning off like that! Mom told me so, but I didn’t want to listen. 😆
Good blog post. Good luck on your travels. I am currently in the purge and selling of my house phase as well. Will be buying a class A when the house sells and will be experiencing this lifestyle for the first time myself. I am heavily into photography as a hobby and retired law enforcement. Can’t wait to hit the road too. Take care.

Hi Michael, boy, getting rid of all the possessions has taken longer and then more daunting than I thought it would be. Of course I try to sell as much as I can to get as much out of it as I can, but then sometimes I just give up and take a giant load to Goodwill! Even getting rid of stuff takes a lot of time and energy resources. I have not missed any of it one little bit. In fact it’s been quite the opposite. I feel so much freer and lighter and life has been simplified! Good luck to you too, maybe I’ll see you out there on the road!

Hi Rilla, thank you for your comment. I’m sure at the moment that I want to do this, but it could all change as soon as I hit the road?! 14 years ago when I went to Australia I decided I did not like traveling alone. However as the years have gone by and I have evolved, I know I like to do it in short spurts at least, never had that chance to do it long term like this. I figure I’m not going to not do it just because I’m afraid that I won’t like it. You only live once and this is something I strongly feel I want to do.
I hope my stories become entertaining for you to read and you and others follow along with me-that way, I won’t really be alone!

I appreciate that, Ellen. I might end up posting stories about the earlier parts of the process, but there’s still so much to do and to come, that might take a while! Still, he upcoming unknown will determine what gets written about. I hope you enjoy! Are you an RV’er?

Yes, we’re RVers too. We’re currently full-timing in a 13′ Scamp travel trailer. We also own a sailboat, so we’ll be splitting our time between RVing and cruising. We love traveling on both water and land 🙂 You can check out our blog at http://thecynicalsailor.blogspot.com.

Wow, Ellen, I looked at going the Scamp route for the lightness and just how small it is. But after looking inside, I just didn’t feel like it was enough room for my two pups to be fair to them, even though I will walk them a LOT. They get the racy-chasies and like to rumble now and then, and there wasn’t room for them to do so in there! And you’re TWO people in there? I am amazed! The sailboat idea sounds wonderful, I am going to read up on your blog, I already like your April challenge on the alphabet! (I like O for outstanding national parks- I want to hit them ALL!)

Hi Jennifer, what an honor to have you reading MY blog!! I am very familiar with you, long before I started to follow you here, and you were just in my neck of the woods, Santa Rosa Beach. Actually I contacted Nikki and Jason at that time wanting to know if they were going to have any sort of public get-togethers I’d love to meet them in but that didn’t really work out. I felt like a stalker! Lol! I may have met you too. I stayed at Topsail one night with a friend to get my feet wet a bit, learned a few lessonsthat didn’t cost me any money, thank God. Yet. Anyway I know it’s beautiful here, but I am extremely ready to leave as I’ve lived here most of my life. I look forward to hearing more of your adventures, maybe we’ll meet get to meet one day.
Thank you for following!

Wow, what a small world – we actually lived in SRB (in Grayton) before we started RVing! And yes we were there most of the winter – we still love the area and have so many friends there, we keep going back! Too bad we didn’t meet while we were there. We’re spending most of the summer in the NE, not sure where you are planning to go but if we are ever in the same area hopefully we can meet up.

A small world it is! I actually met somebody at a workout class that knows you well. I wish I could remember her name now, it was something easy to remember at the time, or unique like maybe her name was one letter, ‘V’ or something? She said she never gets to see you because you’re always on the road. I’ll be heading out west for the most part, but if I ever see that I’m near where you are in your posts I’ll give you a holler. It would be an honor to meet you, I aspire to provide as much information out there as you do. Thanks guys, have a great summer!

Hmmm….the only person I can think of that it might have been is my friend AK. But we know a lot of people down there so who knows! We will heading west again next year – we went that way the past two years and loved so much about it. Safe travels and thank you for all of your kind words!
